Island Hopping
A new paradise every day — just add a ferry
Island hopping is the ultimate form of travel freedom. No fixed itinerary, no long drives, no train schedules. Just a ferry timetable, a backpack, and the promise that every island is a completely different world from the last one — different beaches, different food, different pace, different sunset.
The magic of island hopping is variety compressed into small distances. In the Greek Cyclades, you can go from the cosmopolitan nightlife of Mykonos to the volcanic serenity of Santorini to the untouched quiet of Folegandros in just a few ferry rides. In the Philippines, you move from the underground rivers of Palawan to the chocolate hills of Bohol to the whale shark capital of Oslob.
There's also a rhythm to it that landlocked travel can't match. You arrive at a new port, orient yourself, find a room, explore on foot or by scooter, eat whatever the fishermen caught that morning, watch the sunset from a different angle than yesterday, and sleep to the sound of waves. Then you do it again somewhere new.

Where to experience it
6 world-class destinations for island hopping
Cyclades
Greece
Santorini's caldera, Mykonos's nightlife, Naxos's beaches, Paros's villages, Milos's moonscapes. Ferries connect them in 1-4 hours. The most iconic island-hopping route in the world.
Palawan & Visayas
Philippines
El Nido's limestone lagoons, Coron's shipwreck diving, Bohol's Chocolate Hills, Cebu's whale sharks. Incredibly affordable, stunning scenery, and the warmest people you'll meet anywhere.
Dalmatian Coast
Croatia
Hvar's lavender fields, Korcula's medieval walls, Vis's hidden coves, Brac's Zlatni Rat beach. Fast catamarans from Split connect the islands. History, wine, and swimming in the same day.
Gulf Islands
Thailand
Koh Samui's luxury resorts, Koh Phangan's full moon parties and yoga retreats, Koh Tao's world-class diving. Ferries and speedboats make multi-island trips easy and cheap.
Lesser Sunda Islands
Indonesia
Bali to Lombok to the Gili Islands to Flores to Komodo. Each island is wildly different — from surf breaks to Komodo dragons to pink beaches. The most adventurous island-hopping route.
Canary Islands
Spain
Seven islands, each a different world: Tenerife's volcano, Gran Canaria's dunes, Lanzarote's lava fields, La Palma's forests. European infrastructure with African sunshine. Year-round warmth.
What to expect
- Ferry times range from 30 minutes (short hops) to 8+ hours (overnight ferries with cabins)
- Book ferries in advance during peak season — they sell out, especially in Greece and Croatia
- Accommodation on smaller islands is simpler. Embrace guesthouses and family-run pensions.
- Scooter rental is the best way to explore most islands ($10-20/day)
- Pack light. You'll be carrying your bag on and off boats, up gangplanks, along harbors.
- Budget varies wildly: $30/day in Philippines/Thailand to $150+/day in Greece/Croatia
Insider tips
In Greece, don't just do the famous islands. Folegandros, Sifnos, and Amorgos have better food, fewer crowds, and more character than Mykonos.
The Philippines is best explored with a mix of flights (Manila to El Nido) and boats. Don't try to do it all by ferry — distances are enormous.
In Croatia, the local konoba (family tavern) always serves better food than the harbor-front restaurants. Walk one block inland.
Travel with a dry bag for your electronics. Boats splash, docks are wet, and tropical rainstorms appear from nowhere.
Build in a "slack day" every 3-4 islands. Island-hopping fatigue is real — sometimes the best day is the one where you stay put and do nothing.
