Travel Tips

  • Stone Town is best explored with a local guide — the alleys are a maze
  • Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim — dress modestly outside beach resorts
  • Try Zanzibar pizza (stuffed flatbread) and urojo (Zanzibar soup)
  • Snorkeling off Mnemba Atoll is world-class — book a boat trip
  • Spice tour is a must — you'll never look at your spice rack the same way
  • Combine with a Serengeti safari on mainland Tanzania

Getting There & Around

Dalla dalla (minibuses) are the local transport but very basic. Taxis and private drivers are the practical option. Scooter rental is available but roads are rough. Domestic flights connect to Dar es Salaam. Ferries cross from Dar es Salaam (2 hours). Walking in Stone Town is the only way.
