Travel Tips
- Tulum Beach Road is a sandy single lane — rent a bike, not a car
- Visit at least 3 cenotes — each is completely different (Gran Cenote, Cenote Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote)
- The ruins are best visited at 8am opening to beat heat and crowds
- Tulum has become very expensive — budget travelers should stay in town, not the beach zone
- Sargassum seaweed can be heavy on beaches March-August — check conditions
- Mosquitoes are fierce at sunset — bring strong repellent
Getting There & Around
Tulum town and beach are separate — the beach zone is 3-5 km from town. Bicycles are the local transport along the beach road. Taxis connect town and beach. Colectivos (shared vans) run to Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Renting a car is useful for cenotes and day trips. ADO buses connect to Cancun airport (2 hours).
