Travel Tips

  • Reserve Haleakala sunrise tickets at recreation.gov 60 days in advance
  • The Road to Hana is best done as an overnight — don't rush it
  • Snorkel at Molokini Crater for the clearest water
  • Book Mama's Fish House weeks in advance — it's always full
  • Whale watching season is December to April (humpback whales)
  • Respect Hawaiian culture — learn about the land's significance to Native Hawaiians

Getting There & Around

A rental car is essential — Maui has limited public transit. The Maui Bus runs some routes but is not practical for tourism. Uber/Lyft coverage is limited. The airport is in Kahului; resorts are 30-60 minutes away. The Road to Hana should not be attempted in the dark.
